Pharmacist‘s Path

Renewal of a medieval Fortress, 1998 - 2005, Ostwestfalen-Lippe

The 200 m altitude difference is overcome by the historic “Apothekerweg“ (“Pharmacist’s path“) which functions as a connection between fortress and town, carved into the topography by centuries of usage and environmental conditions. The aim was to make the historic sunken path passable and experienceable again, while retaining its past figure and meaning. A step system, built as a setting park with weser sandstone from the local fraction, is incorporated into the archaeologically valuable landscape structure, whereby attention was payed to preserve the existing stock. Picturesque growing stem formations of mixed hornbeam hedges frame the way and can now be seen and experienced by the visitor again.
